Installation

The following steps must be executed:

  1. The different files of the distribution releases of are compressed in a "*.zip" file, which can be downloaded from the "Download Area". This file must be unzipped in a temporary directory. By executing the "setup.exe" application contained in the "*.zip" file, is installed on the hard disk ( e.g.: into the directory "c:\Program Files\ParaPort" ).
  2. To install the driver, launch the "Add/Remove Hardware Wizard" and follow the instructions:
    • You must have administration rights on the computer.
    • You must select the setup information file "ParaPort.inf" to install the driver.
    • The installation on

      systems is described in details below.

    • During the installation, the file "ParaPort.sys" is copied into the subdirectory "drivers" of the Windows system directory ( e.g.: "c:\WinNT\system32" ) and the file "ParaPort.inf" into the subdirectory "inf" ( may be with another name "oem?.inf" ).
  3. Launch the "ParaPortUtility.exe" to access the parallel port.

Each distribution contains a "ReadMe.txt" file with last minute information, the list of the files and their role.

Driver installation on Windows 98

Launch the "Add/Remove Hardware Wizard" ...

...in the Windows 98 Control Panel ( click on "Windows Start Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" ). The following dialog box is displayed:

Follow the instructions to add a device:

Windows will look for Plug and Play hardware:

When it has finished, add a new device...

...by selecting "No, the device isn't in the list":

Define the Hardware Type...

as "Other devices". You may scroll down to find this selection:

Load the Setup Information File...

...by clicking on the button "Have Disk"...

... and "Browse":

In the "file open dialog box" select the file "ParaPort.inf" and click "OK":

Confirm the source directory for the driver files:

Select the Driver...

...by clicking on the button "Next" a first time...

...and "Finish" a second time:

The "Add/Remove Hardware Wizard" will do its job and finish.

If the following dialog box appears, click on "OK" to continue. If it does not work ( may be an old version of ParaPort is already installed on the computer and the target file "ParaPort.sys" is locked ), click on "Skip File". Doing so, you must copy with the Windows Explorer manually the file "ParaPort.sys" from "c:\Program Files\ParaPort\driver" to the windows driver directory "c:\windows\system32\drivers" and may be you must reboot to get work it.

Verify the installation...

... by opening in system properties dialog box ( click in the "Windows Desktop" the right mouse button on "My Computer" icon to display the pop up menu -> "Properties" ) the Windows Device Manager ( click on "Device Manager" ). The following entry of ParaPort should be displayed:

Driver installation on Windows 2000

Launch the "Add/Remove Hardware Wizard" ...

...in the Windows 2000 Control Panel ( click on "Windows Start Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" ). The following dialog box is displayed:

...and follow the instructions...

... to add a device:

Windows will look for Plug and Play hardware:

When it has finished, add a new device...

...by selecting "No, I want to select the hardware from a list":

Define the Hardware Type...

as "Other devices". You may scroll down to find this selection:

Load the Setup Information File...

...by clicking on the button "Have Disk"...

Confirm the source directory for the driver files:

... by opening in the application "Computer Management" ( click on "Windows Start Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Administrative Tools" -> "Computer Management" ) the Windows Device Manager ( click on "Device Manager" ). The following entry of ParaPort should be displayed:

Since the parallel port hardware exists on the system, do the selection:

Then "add a new hardware device" driver...

...by manually selecting it from a list ( ! ).

Uninstallation

can be uninstalled from the system by following the two steps:

  1. The driver must be uninstalled in the device manager: Click with the right mouse button on the entry to display the pop up menu. In the pop up menu, choose "Remove" or "Uninstall..." and follow the instructions of the dialog box.
  2. The software can be removed from the computer with the "Add/Remove Programs Wizard" ( click on "Windows Start Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Add/Remove Programs" ) as any Windows application.
